Abstract: The mechanism of methane dehydroaromatization on Mo-ZSM-5 catalysts is directly related to the structure of Mo-containing active sites and the state of Mo in them. These catalysts are deactivated through passivation of the active sites by the carbon-containing products of hydrocarbon decomposition. Indeed, the EPR spectra of coke deposits on Mo-containing zeolite catalysts can be recorded both after a relatively longterm exposure to the reaction medium and soon after the onset of the reaction. However, there is still no unified standpoint concerning the state of Mo in these catalysts or the reasons for deactivation. To clarify these points, we studied Mo-ZSM-5 catalysts at various deactivation stages during methane dehydroaromatization by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and EPR.
