Abstract:
Nitrous oxide is a powerful greenhouse and ozone-depleting gas. While the most significant sources of N2O are the oceans, agriculture and the combustion of organic matter, chemical industry contributes up to 10% of emissions of this gas. The control of N2O emissions from industrial sources has become a significant concern. This review discusses briefly about the catalytic methods for the reduction the N2O content of the gaseous effluents. The simplest way to remove N2O from the industrial effluent gas is its catalytic decomposition to N2 and O2. A large variety of catalysts have been studied for N2O decomposition: metal-containing zeolites, supported catalysts, hydrotalcites, and perovskites. A comparison of different catalysts is made. The mechanism of N2O decomposition, as well as an effect of O2, NO, H2O on the decomposition rate is discussed. Another efficient way for N2O removal from exhaust is catalytic reduction of nitrous oxide by CO, H2, NH3 or hydrocarbons. Introduction of the reducing agent allows significantly decreasing of the temperature of N2O removal. In some cases N2O conversion is complete even at room temperature.
