Abstract: Here, we show that the use of the radiation of a powerful ultraviolet ArF laser makes it possible to concurrently record luminescence spectra of the surface layer of a catalyst and perform the spectral elemental analysis of a substance ablated layer by layer from the catalyst surface under the action of laser radiation. The method elaborated allowed us to obtain for the first time the luminescence spectra of alumina powders of different phase composition and the luminescence spectra of surface layers of Pt-containing catalysts on a fiberglass fabric support excited at a wavelength of 193 nm; to determine characteristic luminescence lines of Cr3+ impurity ions as a function of the phase composition of alumina; and to find the distribution of the concentrations of Pt and impurity elements in the surface layer of a catalyst.
