The Second Symposium (TIEES-98) received considerable international attention. Three hundred twenty-two abstracts were received by the Scientific Committee, of which 264 were selected for possible full-paper submission. Under a strict review policy, 234 full-length papers were peer-reviewed, and 160 were accepted for presentation at TIEES-98. The acceptance rate for the papers was 68.5%. TIEES-98 featured 13 keynote presentations by respected and recognized scientists, and over 150 general papers, exceeding the previous success and widening the Symposium's international and local participation. TIEES-98 was organized by Karadeniz Technical University, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, the University of Victoria, the University of Miami, and Istanbul Technical University. The Symposium was planned to provide a forum for researchers and scientists from all over the world to exchange information, present new developments, and discuss the future direction and priorities in the field of energy and environment.
