A series of novel 2-[(arylimino)alkyl]pyridine derivatives containing electron withdrawing groups (F, Cl, Br, CF3, NO2) in aryl rings have been synthesized and fully characterized by 1H, 13C and 19F NMR spectroscopy. The corresponding bidentate nickel(II) complexes have been prepared in good yields. The structure of the complexes obtained was proved by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction studies and 1H NMR spectroscopy of paramagnetic compounds. These complexes activated with methylaluminoxane have been found to be highly active in the oligomerization and polymerization of ethylene (up to 9.58*106 g (mol of cat.)-1 h-1 bar-1) yielding highly branched polyethylene or the mixtures of low molecular weight oligomers, with butenes and hexenes predominanting. The content and ratio of ethylene oligomers as well as the polymer properties (molecular weight, degree of branching) have strongly depended on the nature of the substituents in the aryl(imino) and pyridine rings.
