Abstract:
Palladium loaded N-doped carbon nanomaterials (such as nanotubes, nanofibers, graphenes) attract a great interest of many researchers owing to various catalytic applications. However, the nature of active palladium species is still under discussion. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is a surface-sensitive technique providing ability to investigate element electronic states. This work demonstrates examples of XPS application for.investigation of Pd catalysts supported on as-prepared and treated nitrogen-doped carbon nanomaterials. The aim of work is to shed light on the features of interaction between palladium and nitrogen species. Palladium loaded N-doped carbon nanomaterials are attractive objects of research in the catalysis field. The catalytic properties of Pd/N-CNTs and Pd/N-CNFs can be considered as result of the interaction between palladium and nitrogen species incorporated into carbon matrix. Two palladium forms with Eb(Pd3d5/2) of ~335.8 and ~337.8 eV were observed on the surface of N-modified carbon materials using XPS. The Pd3d component with higher binding energy can be attributed to a combination of different palladium states. The procedure of quantitative analysis of catalytically active palladium states should be developed. This work was emanated from research conducted with financial support of the Russian Science Foundation (Grant No. 15-13-10043).
