Abstract:
Pt/CeO2 catalysts with platinum concentration varying from 1 to 20 wt.% were synthesized by coprecipitation of platinum and ceria from a solution of platinum and cerium nitrates. It was found that higher platinum loading than 1 wt.% resulted in strong enhancement of the catalytic activity in lowtemperature CO oxidation indicating high CO conversion already at temperature as low as –10°С. This enhancement in the catalytic activity correlates with appearance of high amount of weakly bound oxygen atoms activated by incorporation of Pt2+ and Pt4+ ions into ceria lattice with formation of PtxCe1-xO2-x-δ solid solution. These experimental findings have been supported and rationalized by results of density-functional calculations performed for both bulk and nanocomposite Pt/CeO2 models [1,2].
