Abstract:
Self-coupling of 1-pentanol to branched 2-propyl-1-heptanol was studied over a range of heterogeneous noble catalysts. Ir, Pd, Rh, Pt, Ru supported over CeO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and mesoporous carbon support were prepared, characterized by TEM, XPS and TPR and evaluated in terms of their catalytic behavior. Conversion of 1-pentanol increased in the order Ir/CeO2 << Rh/Al2O3 < Pd/ZrO2 < Ru/C < Ir/C < Pd/C <Pt/C < Pt/Al2O3. Selectivity to 2-propyl-1-heptanol was increased in the sequence Ir/CeO2 << Ir/C < Ru/C< Rh/Al2O3 ~ Pd/C ~ Pt/C ~ Pd/ZrO2 ~ Pt/Al2O3 being substantially influenced by temperature. Pd/C, Pt/C and Pt/Al2O3 exhibited the highest yield of 2-propyl-1-heptanol. Formation of catalytic sites over alkali modified Pt/Al2O3 was studied by UV–vis and FTIR spectroscopy and interpreted on the basis of reaction kinetics clarifying the mechanism of 1-pentanol coupling over Pt/Al2O3.
