Abstract:
Catalytic processing of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHCs) into carbon nanomaterial is one of the most effective ways for utilisation of hazardous CHC-associated wastes. This approach is based on usage of self-organizing catalysts produced as a result of spontaneous carbon erosion of bulk Ni-M alloys used as precursors. Series of sponge-like alloys Ni-M (M = Pt, Pd, Mo; 1-10 at.%) was prepared by modified coprecipitation method. Formation of Ni-based alloys was evidenced by XRD. The impact of M on catalytic activity of Ni in decomposition of C2H4Cl2 vapors (550-750°С) with formation of segmental carbon filaments has been studied. Carbon nanostructured filaments (CNFs) produced on Ni-M alloys were shown to be characterized with expressed segmental structure in which the blocks of densely and loosely packed graphenes are stacked with more or less regular alteration. Introduction of Mo into Ni-based precursors was found to have boosting effect on both activity and stability of catalyst. Preferential growth of segmental CNFs was observed in all cases. More features of such carbon material revealed by Raman, BET and XPS, as well as mechanistic aspects of its formation, will be discussed in detail.
