A process for oxidizing alkyl aromatic compounds is described. The process includes contacting the alkyl aromatic compound; an oxidation solvent comprising a carboxylic acid; ammonia or an ammonium compound; a bromine source; a catalyst; and an oxidizing agent in a reaction zone under oxidizing conditions to produce an oxidation product comprising an aromatic carboxylic acid, and an aromatic amide compound; and hydrolyzing the aromatic amide compound with a hydrolyzing agent to form an ammonium compound or ammonia and the aromatic carboxylic acid, wherein the hydrolyzing agent comprises an acid, or water, or both.
