English abstract: A method of obtaining elemental sulphur from sulphurous gas and hydrogen sulphide by means of the Klaus reaction consists in introducing the reaction gas at a temperature of at least 120 DEG C into a layer of the catalyst divided into at least two parts, the gas flow being directed at right angles to the cross-section dividing the catalyst layer. At the same time the sulphurous gas and the hydrogen sulphide at a temperature lower than the sulphur dew point are introduced into at least one of the parts of the catalyst layer. The reaction gas is mixed and/or cooled between the parts of the catalyst layer formed during its division. The direction of the reaction gas feed is periodically changed to the opposite one in at least one part of the catalyst layer whenever the temperature gradient between the point of inlet of the gas into the catalyst and the point of its outlet from the latter reaches 50-150 DEG C. The gaseous sulphur generated as a result of interaction between the reaction gas and the catalyst is extracted from the layer of the latter and condensed afterwards.
