The H2-contg. gas is obtained by conversion of the natural gas with O2 on a fixed bed of heated catalysts at 850-1150° and 1.7-40 atm. The product yield is increased and the unit cost is reduced by preheating the gas to 120-300° before passing onto the catalyst. The catalyst is heated by reversing the direction of the gas flow for ∼5-120 min. In a preferred embodiment, the process is carried out with the O2 content in the original mixt. 0.40-0.53 m3/m3 natural gas.
