A catalyst with improved activity for prepg. polyethylene [9002-88-4] was prepd. by mixing powd. Mg [7439-95-4] with an alkyl halide and a Ti halide with subsequent heating of the catalyst at the b.p. of the alkyl halide, preferably at 20-200°. The molar ratio was such that 3.0 × 10-2 ≥ (Ti/Mg) ≥ 3.25 × 10-3; the molar ratio of Mg/alkyl halide is 2-10.
