The title compd. (I) is prepd. by treating HCHO with isobutylene in the presence of solid catalysts, e.g. silica gel, contg. <0.005% Al2O3, or Ca silicate. The product yield is increased by using solid catalysts with a surface acidity of ≤ 1.5.
