Alkali chlorides, at a temp. above the m.p. of the corresponding pyrosulfates, are treated with a mixt. of SO2 and SO3 contg. 50-70% of the latter. The product is fused pyrosulfite and a gaseous mixt.: 2MCl + 3SO3 → M2S2O7 + 2Cl + SO2. To the fusion is then added enough of the chloride to form the sulfate: 2M2S2O7 + 2MCl → 3M2SO4 + 2Cl + SO2. The gaseous mixt. is either converted to SO2Cl2, or Cl and SO2 are recovered separately.
