A method has been developed for obtaining nicotinic acid in yields of 82 - 86 mol % and without toxic gaseous or liquid waste. The process involves gas-phase, single-stage oxidation of beta -picoline with oxygen in the presence of steam and of a catalyst based on vanadium and titanium oxides, with or without additives, at a temperature of 250-290 DEG C, the molar ratios of O2 to beta -picoline being 15 - 40 and of H2O to beta -picoline being 10 - 70.
