A method of obtaining methanol consists in passing a synthesis gas, containing carbon oxides and hydrogen, through an immovable layer of a copper-containing catalyst at a temperature of 150-300 DEG C and at a pressure of 3.0-15.0 MPa. The catalyst is divided into two parts in an equal ratio or in a ratio of 0.5-1. The gas mixture obtained after the passage of the first part of the catalyst layer is mixed before its introduction into the second part of the catalyst layer. As a result, a reaction mixture is obtained which contains the end product. Each subsequent passage of the synthesis gas through the catalyst layer is effected in a direction opposite to the previous one.
