The invention relates to process for the hydrotreatment of a vegetable biomass comprising contacting said vegetable biomass with a mixed metal oxide or metal-metalloid oxide catalyst comprising nickel and at least one other element chosen from a group 6 and/or 8 and/or 9 and/or 10 and/or 11 metal and/or at least one group 13 element, in an aqueous medium at a pressure in the range of 10 to 400 bar and at a temperature in the range of 50 °C to 450 °C until a predetermined level of hydrotreatment of said biomass is obtained.
