Catalytic properties of H3PMo12O40 and K3PMo12O40, dried at 120 degrees C and calcined at 420 degrees C, are studied in the heterogeneous oxidation of formaldehyde at 120-180 degrees C. Catalytic properties are shown to be dependent on the conditions of thermal treatment. The main product of the formaldehyde oxidation over dried samples is formic acid. The initial selectivity to HCOOH at 120-160 degrees C is 95%. Minor amounts of carbon oxides and methyl formate are also formed. An increase in the conversion or temperature results in a decrease in the selectivity, due to the decomposition (dehydration) of formic acid to CO and H2O. The samples calcined at 420 degrees C are inactive in the formaldehyde oxidation. The results obtained suggest that hydrated H3PMo12O40 and K3PMo12O40 are active catalysts of formaldehyde oxidation to formic acid.
