Electron Microscopic Study of the Cellular Carbon Support Structure

The structure of a new high-porous carbon support formed on reactor walls during the pyrolysis of a propane-butane mixture was studied. The framework of the support was found to be formed by planar carbon layers in the form of strips. At the "microlevel," these strips have the ordered graphite-like structure and consist of fragments of networks of hexagons (002) arranged in layers (002), whose basal planes are oriented to one another and edges are oriented to the strip surface. The specific features of the cellular carbon support structure are discussed and compared to those of supports obtained by pyrolysis of hydrocarbon raw materials.
