The reasons for differences in the available data on NH3 adsorption on V2O5/Al2O3 are analyzed. The electron-accepting ability of vanadium cations is weakened with decreasing oxidation degree of vanadium, and the number of Broensted acid sites diminishes until their complete disappearance upon reduction. Reduction of a vanadium-oxide layer is shown to result in formation of exposed centers of the support via appearance of the coordinatively-unsaturated aluminum cations, which are covered by vanadium-oxide species in the case of the oxidized sample. The reversibility of this phenomenon is observed. The probability of complete dissociation of ammonia molecules in the course of the high-temperature interaction with vanadium-oxide catalysts is estimated.
