The influence of thermal treatment on the properties of the H3PW12O40 . nH(2)O heteropolyacid (HPW) (bulk or supported on γ-Al2O3 and SiO2) is studied by P-31 NMR spectroscopy using solid samples and water extracts. The following factors are found to influence the state of HPW: (1) the chemical interaction with the support, resulting in the decomposition of HPW already at the stage of impregnation (on γ-Al2O3); (2) dispersion of a part of HPW that is not bound to the support, which reduces the HPW thermal stability; and (3) hydrolysis occurring in the solution used for impregnation or in the aqueous phase inside the support as a result of the alkaline leaching of the support, which converts the nonbonded HPW into other less acidic PW-compounds (on γ-Al2O3 and SiO2). At a high air humidity, the nonbonded part of HPW is reversibly transferred from the solid state into the aqueous phase, formed in the pores of the support due to capillary condensation of water vapor.
