Results obtained in the course of studies of the active components of heterogeneous catalysts, their active surface sites and of adsorbed molecules with the use of NMR at high magnetic fields in combination with magic angle spinning (MAS) are discussed. For vanadium catalysts for SO2 oxidation 51V and 17O NMR spectra including those obtained in situ (500°C, SO3, SO2, O02 gas mixture) suggest, in agreement with earlier kinetic data, that the species responsible for the catalytic properties are dimeric or polymeric vanadium(V) complexes. The surface vanadium complexes with SiO2 observed in 51V spectra also notably effect the catalytic activity.
