Infrared (ir) spectroscopy and thermodesorption studies of propylene adsorption on CuO, Cu2O, Cr2O3, CuO-MgO, gallium molybdate, MoO3/SiO2, and MoO3/Al2O3 have shown that propylene is adsorbed in reversible (π-allyl and σ-allyl) and irreversible (π-complexes, carboxylate, carbonate, and formate) forms. It emerges that both symmetric and asymmetric allyl complexes of propylene may participate in acrolein formation. The conversion of the surface π-allyl complexes into the Me-O-CH2-CH=CH2 type compound takes place on a gallium molybdate catalyst. π-Complexes, carboxylates, carbonates, and formates yield the products of complete oxidation, CO2 and H2O. This may occur with surface carboxylate-formate complexes either by a stepwise mechanism involving catalyst oxygen or by a concerted mechanism with the participation of molecular oxygen.
