The rates of adsorption of oxygen at 20 C and the interaction of the adsorbed oxygen with molecular hydrogen at -78 and 20 C were investigated on silver films. The kinetics of the adsorption of oxygen up to a degree of surface coverage of 0. 35 to 0. 40 is described by the Roginskii-Zel'dovich equation. The exponential role of the decrease in the rate of adsorption of oxygen with degree of surface coverage is determined by the interaction between the adsorbed particles of oxygen. It has been established that the reaction between the adsorbed oxygen and molecular hydrogen proceeds in two steps: 2Oads. + H2 = 2OHads.; 2OHads. + H2 = 2H2O. Under the investigated conditions, the rate of the second step is two to three orders lower than the rate of the first. The rate of the first step is proportional to the hydrogen pressure, while the dependence of its initial rate on the degree of surface coverage by oxygen passes through a maximum. A degree of coverage of 0. 18 to 0. 26 is optimum. The rate of the second step is proportional to the hydrogen pressure and degree of coverage of the surface by hydroxyl groups.
