The effect of temperature variations of the adsorption characteristics on the effectiveness of a porous catalyst is discussed on the basis of the results following from a solution, for the case of nonisothermal internal diffusion, for a reaction of first order with respect to the surface concentration the kinetics of which is expressed by a Langmuir-Hinshelwood type of rate equation. For exothermic reactions it follows that the retardation effect of adsorption is diminished, with the result that the effectiveness factors are in varying degree higher than for the isothermal case or also for cases not considering adsorption processes on the catalyst and their dependence on temperature Endothermic reactions are influenced analogously by these phenomena, the individual effects, however, being less pronounced (in the region of low values of the effectiveness factors) than for exothermic reactions. The concept of the so-called characteristic linear dimension of the catalyst is unsuitable, because for the nonisothermal case it is not possible with the aid of this concept even approx. to predict the effectiveness of catalyst particles of different geometrical shape.
