The present review systematizes structural and spectral data on a large group of v-allyl complex compounds with symmetrical or slightly asymmetrical arrangements of the allyl group. An analysis is made of the assignment of the absorption bands given in various papers on the basis of experimental data on the positions and intensities of the bands in the infrared and Raman spectra, the ratio of the number of polarized and depolarized bands in the Raman spectra, and a comparative analysis of the frequencies of the normal and deuterated derivatives. It is shown
that all these data cannot ensure an unambiguous assignment. The reason is that the vibrations of the individual groups of atoms (C-C-C, CH 2, etc.) are not characteristic with respect to frequency. The possibilities provided by the additional use of the methods of theoretical analysis of the frequencies and forms of the vibrations are examined. It is shown that for molecules of this kind it is necessary to calculate the vibrations of the entire molecule and to find the
correct force field (FF). Published calculations are examined, and it is shown that when the correct FF is known it is possible to obtain force constants carrying information on the state of the chemical bond. For a series of molecules (2E-C3H5M_X)2, where R = H, C1, Br, CH3; M =Pd or Pt; and X = C1, Br, or I, it has been shown that the force constants of the M-C (allyl) bond show a correlation with the reactivity of these molecules in the rearrangement of butadiene.
