Abstract:
Molybdenyl phosphates (MoO2)(HPO4) (I) and (MoO2)2(P2O7) (II) are prepared and characterized by 31P NMR. H3PMo12O40 heteropolyacid (HPA) decomposes upon thermolysis by two routes: (i) to form MoO3 and I (at ∼ 400°C) and (ii) through the anhydride phase PMo12O38.5 to form MoO3 and II (at ∼ 500°C). The ratio between the reaction routes depends on the heat treatment of the HPA (which controls the extent of the preliminary loss of water of constitution). Phases I and II in the thermolysis products are highly disperse. For this reason, I survives in them up to 650-700°C, whereas when bulk, I transforms to II below 400°C. Mother liquors from the synthesis of I (with P : Mo ≥ 1 and [Mo] ≈ 1 mol/1 obtained by mixing H3PMo12O40 and H3PO4) contained molybdenyl phosphate complexes (95Mo NMR signals with δ = -66 and -103 ppm).
