Reaction of Polynuclear Platinum Carbonyl with Tin(II) Chloride

The H-2[Pt-3(CO)(6)](5) + SnCl2 reaction solutions and the precipitates isolated from these solutions were studied by IR and Mossbauer spectroscopy and NMR. At any initial reagent ratio in the range [Sn] : [Pt] = 1-5, the reaction yields a Pt-Sn-CO cluster with the atomic ratio Sn : Pt = 1 : 1. The adsorption properties of the platinum-tin-carbonyl cluster were examined. Strong adsorption of the cluster on gamma -Al2O3 and its high stability in contact with the supporter allow to use it as a precursor of supported bimetallic Pt-Sn/gamma -Al2O3 catalysts and to prepare catalysts of the adsorption type of definite compositions.
