Abstract:
A method for simultaneously, calculating chemical and phase equilibria in gas-liquid two-phase systems involving deterministic chemical reactions, is suggested. A formal approach is used according to which transfer of components from one phase to, another is also. treated as a reversible "chemical reactions." The equilibrium compositions of both phases are found by minimizing the total Gibbs energy comprising the energies of the liquid and gas phases. Corrections for nonideality are calculated according to the Redlich-Kwong-Soave equation of state. The method is illustrated by calculations of chemical and phase equilibria for the synthesis of methanol in the liquid phase. Equilibrium shifts toward methanol compared with a homogeneous gas-phase process are discussed.
