Abstract:
The influence of alumina and silica gel on the selectivity in anisole nitration with N2O4 in organic solvents has been studied. The para/ortho ratio was found to increase, the effect being larger in the case of Al2O3. To account for this the nitration of anisole in the presence of alumina was supposed to proceed mainly via nitrosation with subsequent oxidation of intermediate p-nitroso-anisole. Quantum-chemical calculations performed to simulate the interaction of N2O4 with the surface of the oxides supports the proposed mechanism.
