Abstract:
Conclusions
1. It was found that for hexyl-, heptyl-, decyl-, and hexadecylviologens, reduced forms of which are insoluble in water but bind readily to the membranes of lipid vesicles, the potentials of one-electron reduction of their oxidized forms in an aqueous solution of lecithin vesicles substantially exceed the potentials characteristic of these viologens in a homogeneous aqueous solution.
2. The observed effect may be explained by a substantial increase in the hydrophobicity of the molecules of the indicated alkylviologens during their reduction.
