Abstract:
Nitrogen oxides-NO, (NO and NOt)-are the most common and dangerous pollutants of the atmosphere. These compounds have overall toxic and lung irritating effects, and in most industrially developed countries very strict ambient air quality standards for NO, have been established. Nitrogen oxides as well as sulfur oxides contribute to the
formation of acid rain, which exerts very harmful effects on forests and vegetation, and poisons water basins. Photolytic decomposition of NO2 by solar irradiation (NO2 + hv-, NO + 0) results in ozone formation; the latter when combined with hydrocarbons, forms toxic peroxy compounds (smog) [l].
Large amounts of NO, (assumed to be in the range of 40-420. lo6 t/a) are formed from natural sources: forest fires, lightening, processes of nitrification in soil, etc. [2]. Nowadays the amount of NO, produced by human activity is close to 60 1 lo6 t/a (calc. as NOz). Anthropogeneous sources of NO., are more dangerous than natural
ones because they are locally situated and lead to high concentrations of NO, in ambient air.
The main sources of NO, in industrialized countries are energy production and transport; less NO, is due to chemical industry (e.g., for FRG the relative contributions are 28%, 55%, and 26% [3]). Thus, the main part of manmade NO, forms during combustion of fossil fuels: natural gas, oil, coal, and other solid fuels. As the amount of burnt fuel increases, a further increase in NO, emissions may lead to global irreversible ecological changes. Therefore at present the development of NO, control is an urgent task. To solve this problem, a complex approach is needed which would include both flue gas treatment and combustion control techniques for reducing or excluding NO, formation.
