Abstract:
The tunnel electron transfer from the first singlet electronically excited state of naphthalene (S1Nh) to CCl4 in vitreous solutions at low temperatures was studied. The probability of the tunnel transfer from excited deuterated naphthalene (S1Nh-d8) was found to exceed that from S1Nh, i.e. the inverse isotope effect was observed. The experimental data obtained are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of Jortner. Within the accuracy of the measurements the rate of electron tunneling at 77 K was found to be the same in C2H5OH, CH3OH, CD3OD and toluene matrices. No increase of the rate in the C2H5OH matrix was observed upon increasing the temperature from 77 to 140 K.
