Abstract:
Recently, there has been considerable interest in highly exothermic hydrogenation or oxygenation of organic substances in immobile catalyst beds [1-5] and also in two-phase reacting flows [6]. There are rapid phase transitions in such reactions, which raise the concentration of the evaporating substance and cause a substantial contribution from the heterogeneous catalytic reaction in the vapor phase to the overall reactor heat balance. Experiments have been performed on the hydrogenation of cyclooctadiene to cyclooctane [I], and also on the hydrogenation of alfa-methylstyrene [2], crotonaldehyde [3], and gasoline [4], which has shown that there are several stationary states in a porous grain and in the catalyst bed, as well as oscillating conditions related to changes in the proportion of wetted surface [5]. It is thus necessary to devise a fairly simple model for use in numerical analysis and identifying the regions where multiple stationary states or oscillations occur in reactions involving phase transitions.
