Abstract:
The title reaction was studied with silicate catalysts containing Al, Zr, Ga, Be, and Y oxides and having acidic sites of different strength. The product consisted of butene isomers with ∼33% n-butenes; the product composition did not depend on the strength of the acidic sites, but the reaction rate increased as the strength of these sites increased. The rate of structural isomerization of isobutylene on these catalysts was appreciably lower than the rate of n-alkene formation by dehydration. A carbocation mechanism was proposed.
