Abstract:
Vesicles were prepared from egg lecithin, the internal solution of which contained a tris-bipyridal Ru(II) complex at
1.6 × 103M and the irreversible electron donor Na2EDTA (0.2M). Monochromatic light of wavelength 488 nm, which excited mainly the tris-bipyridal Ru(II) complex, caused a photocatalytic transfer of electrons through the vesicle membrane from the EDTA2- of the internal solution. Cetyl viologen dibromide (I) and decyl viologen dibromide, which were insoluble in H2O but permeated the lipid membrane, were used as electron carriers. The initial quantum yield of the phototransfer of electrons to Fe(CN6)3- (Hill reaction) was 2.3 and 1.5%, respectively, for I/lipid molar ratios of 1:100 and 1:20. The no. of electrons transferred through the membrane was always higher than the no. of photocatalyst and carrier mols. in the system.
