Abstract:
A study has been made of the oxidation of mixtures consisting of 12-13% CH3OH plus 19-24% O2 plus 65-68% C3H8 (or C2H6) with and without the presence of iron-molybdenum and chromium-iron-molybdenum oxide catalysts. The original mixtures and the mixtures obtained by their catalytic oxidation do not autoignite and will not burn at temperatures below 400 degree. The hydrocarbons undergo practically no changes on the catalysts at 350 degree (only traces of alkenes and hydrogen can be detected in the products). The selectivity of the catalysts with respect to formaldehyde is lower than when processing the usual alcohol-air mixtures with 6. 5% CH3OH.
