Abstract:
In a circulating-flow unit in the temperature interval 373-403 degree K in excess oxygen with low concentrations of carbon monoxide, undamped, isothermal, complex, relaxation oscillations of the reaction rate have been observed, with a period of 120-150 min. Removal of the reaction product CO2 from the cycle eliminates the oscillations; an increase in the degree of oxidation of the supported platinum shortens the oscillation period to 60 min, the time-averaged activity of the catalyst remaining the same. Slow, reversible sorption of the product apparently plays the role of a buffer stage that leads to the appearance of autooscillations within a certain region of reactant concentrations.
