Abstract:
The principles of the gas-phase oxidation of dimethyl sulfide by oxygen in the presence of a vanadium oxide catalyst were studied. On the basis of the reaction kinetics and a model study, it is recommended that the production of dimethyl sulfoxide be conducted at a temperature below 200°, conversion of dimethyl sulfide less than 50%, in the presence of excess oxygen relative to the sulfide, in a reactor with a boiling bed of the catalyst in a reactor-regenerator system.
