Abstract:
The catalytic properties of samples obtained from a silicon-molybdenum-vanadium heteropoly acid (HPA) have been investigated. It is shown that the solid catalyst is comparatively inefficient in the oxidation of acrolein to acrylic acid. The impregnation of a solution of the HPA into coarsely dispersed silica gel results in the formation of an active and selective catalyst, while a relatively inactive catalyst for thorough oxidation is formed on the basis of highly dispersed silica gel. The data obtained have been attributed to the formation and stabilization of various forms of vanadium- and molybdenum-containing compounds on the surfaces of the supports.
