Abstract:
The authors investigated the deep oxidation of butane on mixed, tabletized Pt black + MOx catalysts, where MOx represents Fe2O3, ZnO, V2O5, SiO2, or Al2O3. Except for the samples with V2O5 and ZnO, they discovered a nonadditive activity increase with individual oxides as compared to platinum black alone. In such cases, a critical dependence of the reaction rate on the concentration of the hydrocarbon was observed; these effects were conditioned by a spreading of the reaction to the bulk of the reaction space. It was proposed to explain the effects by connecting them with the development of a radical-chain process on the surface of the oxide, initiated by active particles originating from platinum black.
