Abstract:
Hydrargillite (bayerite, boehmite) was subjected to mechanochemical activation in a planetary mill for reducing crystallite sizes to 300-500 Å. Activated platelets (∼10 Å thick) reacted with ZnO on aging mixtures in contact with distilled H2O
(pH 7). X-ray phase analysis and electron microscopy after 24 h indicated formation of Zn hydroxyaluminates. Non-activated Al(OH)3 does not react. Similar behavior was observed for mixtures with MgO or other divalent metal oxides.
