Abstract:
In the presence of various types of catalysts, methanethiol reacts with methanol to form dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl ether. The most active catalysts are those that have strong Lewis acid centers on the surface, paired with basic centers of moderate strength. A mechanism is proposed in which the action of methanol produces a rapid methoxylation of the surface, followed by reaction of CH3O groups with methanethiol or methanol, leading to dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl ether, respectively. The results from kinetic studies are consistent with the postulated mechanism.
