Abstract:
The sintering of palladium particles on the surface of carbon supports is studied by high-resolution electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is found that the surface defects (kinks and face planes of packages of graphitelike carbon) may play the role of localization sites for Pd particles. A higher energy inhomogeneity of the support surface and a growth in the concentration of surface oxygen groups favor the retention of high catalytic activities of Pd/C catalysts at higher temperatures. A scheme for the sintering of Pd particles involving migration of palladium atoms over the surface of carbon supports is proposed.
