Abstract:
The change in the apparent activation energy of the regeneration of coked iron oxide catalyst with temperature is due to a change in rate-determining step. Below about 823 degree K the process is limited by detachment of oxygen from the catalyst, and the activation energy is determined by the oxidation of carbon. At higher temperatures the regeneration is limited by the addition of gas-phase oxygen to the catalyst, and the activation energy is limited by the oxidation of iron. The addition of potassium accelerates iron oxidation, and so decreases the activation energy of the process and accelerates carbon burn-off at high temperature.
