Abstract:
Separate investigations have been made of the catalytic activities of a wide range of oxides of groups I-VIII metals in the Claus reaction and in the oxidation of H2S by oxygen, both major means of sulfur recovery from industrial waste gases. Only 9 of the 21 oxides used in the Claus reaction exhibit stable activity. The remaining oxides are deactivated, mainly by absorbing H2S and being converted to sulfides. There are similar tendencies in the changes of sulfur formation specific velocities in both processes in the series of stable oxides V2O5, TiO2, Mn2O3, Al2O3, MgO, and Cr2O3. Vanadium pentoxide is the most active catalyst in the total and partial oxidations of H2S and the Claus reaction.
