Abstract:
An ESR study showed that active site formation in Zr/SiO2 catalysts involves stages of reduction and hydrogenation of Zr4+. Hydrogenation of Zr3+ occurs with significantly greater difficulty that does the initial hydrogenation of Zr4+ allylic complexes. Increasing Zr3+ concentration by an order of magnitude by photoreduction has almost no effect on catalyst activity in C6H6 hydrogenation (the degree of Zr ion oxidation has no effect on the rate of this reaction). Differences were observed in the reaction capacities of Zr3+ alkyl and hydride complexes toward CO and C6H6. The interactions of these molecules are controlled not by the valence state of Zr3+, but by its coordination environment.
