Abstract:
The dependence of the rate of formation of mesitylene oxide in the title reaction on [H2O] paralleled the dependence of H0 on [H2O], indicating that retardation of the rate is detected by decreasing medium acidity. Virtually identical results were obtained with H3PW12O40 and H3PW12O40·12H2O. The high yield of mesitylene reflects the decomposition of the initial homogeneous reaction system into two phases in the course of the reaction: one phase containing H3PW12O40 in aqueous acetone, and another containing mesitylene and acetone; thus mesitylene is removed from the reaction zone and is not subject to further transformation.
