Abstract:
Magnesium(II) hydroxoferrite and highly disperse iron(III) hydroxide are formed when mixed Fe(III) and Mg(II) salt solutions are coprecipitated. It is shown for the first time that, whatever the composition of the starting solutions, magnesium hydroxoferrite has a constant cationic ratio Fe/Mg = 1:3 with a repetition period c = 7.9-8.2 angstrom in freshly precipitated samples. The variation in the parameter c is associated with the nature of the anions NO3-, CO32-, etc., in the intermediate salt.
